Almost everyone has heard of animals or plants being afflicted with mites; on humans, however, many shudder at the thought of these microscopic creatures crawling around on our skin. There are several types of mites that prefer a human host, however; some beneficial and others that are health concerns. It behooves everyone to know about each so as to know how, if possible, to eliminate them.

Some types of mites on humans cannot be eradicated, no matter how hard we try. Take eyelash mites, for example. These miniscule creatures are continually living upon our eyelids; mouths buried deep within the follicles of our eyelashes. They are never seen and never felt. The function they provide is actually a very beneficial one; they feed upon dead skin cells and sebaceous fluids that otherwise might build up and create issues. Rarely does the presence of eyelash mites cause any problems, but from time to time, too many of these tiny parasites feed at one follicle and inflammation results. Although their name indicates they dedicate their lives to our eyelash follicles, this is not totally true. The eyelash mite can also be found in the pores of our foreheads, cheeks, nose and chin. These small mites on humans are here to stay; they cannot be washed, scrubbed or wiped away.

Chiggers and straw itch mites are among a couple of the mites on humans that cause irritation to the skin through bites. Chiggers are often prominent in grassy areas, while straw itch mites are within dried grasses and grains. Venturing into areas where these mites are found will result in itchy bites. Secondary infections can sometimes result when bacteria enters into skin that has been broken from relentless scratching.

Scabies is one type of mites on humans that is a health concern. In fact, it is actually considered to be a sexually transmitted disease since it is spread through close contact. Casual contact is not sufficient to spread scabies; actual skin to skin contact. The tiny mite burrows under the skin of humans where they will spend the majority of their life span. Females lay their eggs within the thin “tunnels” under the skin, and also deposit excrement under the epidermis.

These factors all serve to trigger an allergic reaction within your body; resulting in severe and intense itching. After a few weeks, the itching becomes intolerable, and is generally the point where people seek medical treatment. Fortunately, though the red bumps are unsightly and the itching abominable, the cure is relatively easy through a prescribed cream. One type of scabies, however, is much more difficult to treat. Norwegian scabies are mites on humans that are elderly and among those with AIDS.

Several types of mites on humans are common; some provide a good service while others cause irritation. Medical diagnosis should always be sought to ensure proper treatment.
